Wood vs. Vinyl vs. Aluminum Fencing: Which Is Right for You?

July 16, 2026

Most homeowners start a fence project with a picture in mind rather than a material. That is a good place to begin, but the material you choose determines how the fence ages, what it asks of you each year, and how it handles a New England winter.

Cedar gives you natural character and the widest range of custom detail. Northern white cedar holds up well here, and it can be stained to hold its color or left to weather to a silver gray. It is the right answer when you want privacy with warmth, or when the fence needs to be built around a slope, a stone wall, or an unusual layout.

Vinyl is the low-maintenance option. A UV-coated vinyl fence washes clean with soap and water and does not need staining. It comes in white, almond, and clay, in privacy, picket, and rail styles, and it works well around pools and open yards where you want a clean line without annual upkeep.

Aluminum is the choice when you want strength and sight lines at the same time. It resists corrosion, which matters on coastal properties, and it is the standard for pool enclosures with self-closing, child-safe latches. Ornamental aluminum also suits front yards where the fence should define the property without closing it off.

There is no single best material. There is a best material for your property, your budget, and the purpose the fence needs to serve. If you want help sorting through it, request a quote and we will walk the property with you.
